On Saturday, July 27th, at approximately 8:00 pm, a disturbing incident occurred approximately 1.7 miles south of the Klipsan Beach approach outside of Long Beach in Pacific County. A flock of seagulls was intentionally run over by a driver in a silver four-door Jeep Cherokee, resulting in the tragic death of 25 birds. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) Police is actively investigating the incident, which has shocked the local community.
Witnesses reported that the same Jeep nearly struck two individuals walking their dogs on the beach, further highlighting the dangerous behavior of the driver. Several community members, including three witnesses who stopped the vehicle and took photographs, provided crucial information to the authorities. Despite efforts to save the few birds that survived the initial impact, none could be rescued.
The WDFW Police have identified the driver, believed to be living out of state, thanks to the detailed accounts and photographic evidence provided by the community. Officers are currently attempting to contact the individual for questioning.
This incident has highlighted the need for community vigilance and cooperation in protecting wildlife. The WDFW Police encourage anyone with information about the person of interest or the vehicle involved to come forward. You can contact the WDFW Police at (877) 933-9847, report online, or text WDFWTIP at TIP411 (847411).
Under WAC 220-200-100, it is illegal to hunt or harm protected wildlife, including seagulls. The community is reminded of the importance of respecting all wildlife and the laws in place to protect them.
