A dune grass fire erupted Thursday afternoon, August 21, sending flames dozens of feet into the air and prompting a Level 2 evacuation order for residents between 272nd and 252nd streets near Ocean Park. The evacuation order has been lifted
The blaze ignited around 4:00 p.m. north of the Ocean Park beach approach, fueled by dry conditions and swinds out of the north. Flames are moving across the sand dunes, with heavy smoke visible across the community.
The fire had jumped across the approach to the south side as the blaze spread to more than 10 acres of dune grass.
Evacuation Order Issued
Evacuation order was issued but now has been lifted.
Widespread Response
Several trucks were staged at the beach approach, joining Ocean Park crews to battle the blaze. Firefighters have contained the fire.
Community Impact
This latest fire highlights the vulnerability of dune ecosystems in late summer, where extended dry spells and shifting winds can quickly turn small ignitions into dangerous wildfires. Ocean Park residents were reminded to keep evacuation kits ready and heed emergency orders when issued.
