Strong Winds Threaten Southwest Washington and Northwest Oregon Through Early Wednesday

A powerful wind event is impacting southwest Washington and northwest Oregon, with the National Weather Service issuing a High Wind Warning and multiple Wind Advisories through early Wednesday morning. The strongest winds are expected along the coast, where already saturated soils increase the risk of falling trees and power outages.

According to the National Weather Service Portland, southwest winds with gusts up to 60 mph are expected along the South Washington Coast and the North and Central Oregon Coast. The High Wind Warning remains in effect until 6:00 AM Wednesday, December 17. These conditions pose a significant threat to infrastructure, particularly in coastal communities where recent storms have left soils unable to firmly anchor trees.

A broader Wind Advisory is also in place until 6:00 AM Wednesday for the Northern and Central Oregon Coast Range, the Willapa Hills, and the Cascade Foothills, where wind gusts may reach 55 mph. Additional advisories apply from 10:00 PM Tuesday through 4:00 AM Wednesday for the Willamette Valley, the Portland–Vancouver metro area, and southwest Washington lowlands, with gusts up to 50 mph.

The National Weather Service warns that the combination of strong winds and saturated ground significantly increases the likelihood of downed trees and power outages. Coastal and forested areas are especially vulnerable, and residents should be prepared for sudden disruptions.

Officials urge the public to take precautions during this event. Anyone encountering a downed power line should stay well clear and never attempt to drive over it. If a vehicle comes into contact with a fallen line, occupants should remain inside the vehicle and call for emergency assistance.

Residents are encouraged to secure loose outdoor items, avoid unnecessary travel during peak wind hours, and monitor local alerts. Updates and additional safety information are available from NWS Portland at
