The National Weather Service in Portland has issued a High Wind Warning for the South Washington Coast and portions of the northern Oregon coast, in effect until 7:00 PM PST this evening, Thursday, December 18, 2025. Coastal communities including Long Beach, Ocean Park, Raymond, Naselle, Tokeland, Astoria, Seaside, Cannon Beach, Manzanita, Rockaway Beach, Pacific City, Neskowin, Warrenton, and Tillamook are all within the warning area.
Southwest winds are expected to blow at 20 to 30 mph, with gusts reaching up to 60 mph, strong enough to cause widespread impacts. These winds significantly increase the risk of downed trees and power lines, which may result in power outages across coastal communities. Travel conditions may become hazardous, particularly for high-profile vehicles such as RVs, delivery trucks, and trailers, especially on exposed highways and coastal roads.
Residents are urged to prepare for possible power outages by ensuring flashlights, batteries, and backup lighting are ready. Those who rely on gas-powered generators should confirm they have sufficient fuel and that generators are used safely outdoors only. With colder winter conditions, it’s also important to have a plan to maintain safe indoor temperatures if heating systems are disrupted.
Drivers should use extra caution, avoid unnecessary travel if possible, and be alert for falling debris or sudden gusts, particularly near forested areas and open stretches of highway. Coastal winds of this strength can change rapidly and without much warning.
The National Weather Service advises residents to continue monitoring forecasts and alerts for updates as conditions evolve through the evening.
