Dylan’s Cottage Bakery & Delicatessen: A Long Beach Tradition Since 1908
Dylan’s Cottage Bakery & Delicatessen has been serving residents and visitors in downtown Long Beach for more than a century. Known for scratch-made doughnuts, pastries, breads, cakes, sandwiches and comforting deli favorites, the historic bakery remains a popular stop for breakfast, lunch or a treat to take home.
More Than a Century of Baking
The bakery first opened at its present location in 1908 and has operated under several names and owners. Bob and Judi Andrew purchased the business in 1974 and spent nearly half a century helping make it a familiar community gathering place.
Jeff and Casey Harrell and Mark and Lindy Swain took over the bakery in 2020. It was renamed in memory of Dylan Jude Harrell, who died following a 20-month battle with cancer. Dylan’s love of the bakery inspired its colorful touches of unicorns, rainbows and sprinkles.
The playful Dylan Donut—a freshly baked cake doughnut covered with “unicorn” sprinkles—was created in his honor. Proceeds from its sale benefit the Dylan Jude Harrell Community Center in Ilwaco.
Famous Doughnuts Made Fresh Daily
Bakers begin working around 2 a.m., with fresh batches of doughnuts reaching the racks around 5 a.m. The selection includes traditional favorites and distinctive creations that have developed a loyal following.
One of the bakery’s signature creations is the enormous Texas Donut, a handmade raised doughnut available with classic glaze, maple, chocolate or maple-bacon toppings.
The Devil Dog is a soft, raised doughnut shaped like a hot dog bun, filled with Bavarian cream and topped with chocolate. Another local favorite is the maple bar crowned with crispy, smoky bacon for a sweet-and-savory combination.
The bakery offers dozens of flavors, including rotating cake doughnuts and seasonal creations. Customers seeking particular varieties are encouraged to arrive early or place an advance order.
Pastries, Breads, Pies and Cookies
Dylan’s Cottage Bakery emphasizes traditional baking with real flour, sugar and butter. Its bakers prepare croissants, pastries, cookies, pies and breads without relying on premade mixes or shortcuts.
Popular pastries include cinnamon rolls, cherry pockets and buttery apple turnovers filled with cinnamon apples. The Florentine is a delicate Swiss-inspired almond pastry rolled and filled with whipped cream.
The bread selection includes traditional loaves and distinctive choices such as jalapeño bread, which has a crusty exterior and a soft, cheesy interior. Whole pies, including classic cherry pie, can also be ordered for gatherings, holidays and special occasions.
Breakfast and Deli Favorites
The delicatessen expands the bakery beyond sweets with breakfast dishes, soups and freshly prepared sandwiches built on bread baked that morning.
Biscuits and gravy combine flaky, buttery biscuits with rich sausage gravy for a satisfying start to a cool coastal morning. Other breakfast selections may include egg dishes, breakfast sandwiches and hearty potato scrambles.
For lunch, the Reuben is piled with corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and Thousand Island dressing. The classic club sandwich features layers of meat, cheese and bacon on fresh-baked bread.
Clam chowder provides a taste of the Washington coast. The creamy soup is filled with tender clams and can be served on its own or in a freshly baked bread bowl.
Cakes and Catering
The bakery creates locally decorated cakes for birthdays, weddings and other celebrations. Customers can submit an inquiry through the website to discuss cake size, design and availability.
Doughnuts, pastries, breads, pies and deli items can also be ordered in advance. Next-day bakery orders should generally be submitted by the bakery’s stated cutoff time, while deli takeout ordering begins early in the morning.

With more than 100 years of history, Dylan’s Cottage Bakery & Delicatessen is more than a place to purchase a doughnut. It is a community landmark where generations of Peninsula residents and visitors have gathered for fresh pastries, coffee, breakfast, sandwiches and coastal comfort food.
