Surfside management board survey

February 9, 2024 at 6:00pm — February 11, 2024 at 5:00pm

(GMT-08:00) PACIFIC TIME (US & CANADA)

What are the critical issues in your opinion the board needs to address for 2024?

Comment 1

From listening to all of the members feedback, I believe transparency and fairness to all members seems to be a critical issue of our current board. It is unclear whether they understand that they work for us, the membership, and not the other way around. My experience in the 5 years we have lived here full time is that the Board of Trustees believe they know what is best for all and it is futile to try to get them to recognize any other points of view.

Comment 2

Lack of enforcement of covenants. Trees not cut Sheds being built and not permitted Trailers left on lots year around Post more info on the weekender

Comment 3

I feel the seeming lack of transparency is a huge issue.

Comment 4

Trees Waterways Speeding

Comment 5

Creating a harmonious workplace while treating all members with equal respect and courtesy. Educating and involving all members in decision making while upholding the rules and regulations as written.

Comment 6

Board meeting need to be video recorded and made available for member review for 3 years. In this manner we can all watch and hear what was said. The seemingly endless disagreement of what was said by whom and when would largely be resolved. In this manner we can return to effective governance which is sorely needed

Comment 7

Transparency in budget detail specifics. Choice and transparency in community legal representation, attorney selection, all legal matters in their entirety.

Comment 8

I will need another season to decide what’s needed in our community.

Comment 9

Reduce annual dues.

Comment 10

We need to implement electronic voting. Detailed information needs to be shared about a management company responsibilities, scope of powers and costs to property owners before the BOT decides to move forward on this.

Comment 11

Get rid of the tree height covenant. It has caused the most anger and conflict.

Comment 12

Too many to list.

Comment 13

The divisiveness the board brings to the community through lack of reasonability and transparency.

Comment 14

The board has covenants to follow. They need to enforce them ALL equally! They pick and choose which ones to enforce.

Comment 15

Communications with membership. Legal expenses. Foresight: look for ways to actively make this HOA more beautiful in light of the tree devastation.

Comment 16

Extreme bias and questionable election interference

Comment 17

The tree covenant needs to be overhauled entirely so that tree height is equal to surrounding building heights of all members as all views matter, not just those on the ridge. Members would prefer to look at plants more than seeing into windows of taller construction where the trees help block that view. Tree covenant should be simply stated to building heights for all areas otherwise handled between property owners through civil means.

Comment 18

Transparencies in all issues brought forth by membership.

Comment 19

Make it easier to distribute information and involve part timers. Electronic voting in my view would increase member participation.

Comment 20

Shorter board meetings Opportunity for open discussion during meetings from gallery Drainage/flooding Compactor compliance Respectful treatment by board

Comment 21

The board can start by answering members concerns. Transparency went out tge window 2 years ago. Follow the rules. Kurt Olds should not be on the board and they know it. Karma comes around.

Comment 22

Stop the antagonist approach of management, allow new voices and ideas, be more thoughtful in how rules are applied

Comment 23

They are hiding costs inside the budget. And they are pretty much full of 💩 Hiding costs and classifying it as a “general cost”. Screw that. I should not be paying for our HOA to cut down county trees

Comment 24

To be more open and show us where the votes really are.

Comment 25

Stop the Sheriff Deputy madness, we pay taxes and don’t need to pay twice for a service that should be provided. Stop allowing the tree committee to control the life & death of trees in Surfside. Stop wasting our money, millions in payroll is ridiculous.

Comment 26

1. Treat all fairly and equally 2. Transparency 3. Spend money responsibly 4. Review the outdated CCR’s and bring them into the future to benefit all equally

Comment 27

Adopting electronic voting to increase voter turnout, accuracy, and transparency.

Comment 28

Management in the office, getting 315th bridge opened up, pothole/street/drainage issues, electronic voting which I am in favor of, speeding on G Street and I Street.

Comment 29

Transparency Response to member communications

Comment 30

Dues too high. Water unhealthy.

Comment 31

The health and vitality of the entire ecosystem throughout Surfside. We have lost precious ecological safety due to the trees being cut down, the blue-green algae in our bodies of water, and the discoloration of our drinking water. There are many more issues that need to be addressed, but that’s three of the top.

Comment 32

Honest transparency for a start — these zealots need oversight. They need to stop filtering out the needs and wishes of their member neighbors. They absolutely do not represent me, and very much possess inaccurate attitudes concerning our needs and perspectives. I suspect that they are intelligent enough to already know these issues, but on a continuous level I see them acting as though they are unaware of what we know, real details, of their shortcomings, weaknesses and outright lies and misrepresentations. I sure wouldn’t want to be any of them realizing how many of us know them to be immoral and arrogant neighbors none of us feel comfortable sharing the community with.

Comment 33

Answer questions. Publish minutes of all committee and board meetings. Publish quarterly P & L Balance Sheet and register reports. In a word..complete open and transparent communication. The Board needs to stop being paranoid of loosing their power.

Comment 34

Quit spending members money!

Comment 35

Tree covenants

Comment 36

We must have more information available for the members. The tree committee needs to be stripped of its authority, it’s a truly biased way to apply the covenants. We must be able to all have input and be appointed to committees, not just the same members year after year We must be able to discuss issues and concerns with our trustees! This inability to talk to a board member is ridiculous! How can you serve on a board if you don’t have input from a variety of members?

Comment 37

Provide membership with current Treasurer Reports from October2023 to the present day. Provide monthly Board Packets to the membership. Open up SHOA Facebook page to member input and discussion. Open floor comments to be two sided where members can ask questions allowing Trustees to respond, etc.

Comment 38

Final decisions on fines must remain with the board. The committee should make recommendations but they must not be allowed to take enforcement away from the board. The committee should not be primarily made up of those who benefit from the cutting of trees and should not be chaired by such. Those who are damaged by the cutting of trees need to have a voice.

Comment 39

Reinstate the Fish and Waterways Committee

Comment 40

Get along with each other with respect and professionalism. Respect differences and come to mutual decision on behalf of the members.

Comment 41

Honesty

Comment 42

Address more issues than trees, like equity of covenants applied same to all lots. I have a lot currently can only use seasonally for rv. I want to be able to have a park unit or. Tiny home year round. I am of course located West of J Place. Yes I knew the restrictions hen purchased, what I did not know was that the rules are all to the benefit of those on J place and everyone east of J Place have have more property rights. This is wrong!

Comment 43

Regaling confidence of the members

Comment 44

We need unbiased, positive representation that is respectful

Any general comments about electronic voting or the HOA?

Comment 1

I absolutely believe we need electronic voting! As for the use of a Professional Management Company, I would like to declare my choices regarding that possibility is pretty much in the neutral area only because I really feel I need a clearer understanding of what that entails. A home we own in the Phoenix area is handled by a professional HOA Mgmt Co. that also manages many other HOAs so our experience is dealing with a large staff that is so impersonal and the staff there have NO connection to our neighborhood, they are dealing with thousands of homes.

Comment 2

In general, I feel electronic voting would be really helpful to Surfside property owners. That said, I think there should always be a paper ballot option for those uncomfortable with computers. Voting by proxy, though, seems very open to abuse (such as harvesting ballots)

Comment 3

I believe that more members will vote and it might help eliminate the abuse of proxy’s being used.

Comment 4

I believe our HOA and residents as well could benefit from conflict resolution training with the goal of ensuring trust that mutually agreed upon goals may be achieved.

Comment 5

No management company hired until all property owners are aware of costs, scope of responsibilities and who they answer to. It is time to implement electronic voting.

Comment 6

HOA needs to be more transparent. I support electronic voting

Comment 7

We definitely need electronic voting. There is too much fraud and vote manipulation with the current system.

Comment 8

It would eliminate absentee ballot stealing and manipulation as well as give those that can’t make the meeting opportunity.

Comment 9

There isn’t an avenue of communication even to let the Board know it is appreciated for the difficulties and responsibilities of managing this HOA. We elect with the hope of a less divided HOA , anything that makes this so creates positivity about building or buying here and investing further in our homes and properties. Not only is voting electronically a no-brainer, but also who we are voting for or against, their qualifications. and probably their addresses and lengths of residence should be included.

Comment 10

Electronic voting is necessary to eliminate behind closed door balloting

Comment 11

Please give timeline on when electronic voting options will be implemented instead of vague nebulous responses that ignore facts relating to increased participation by making the process feasible and inexpensive for all. Please quit sandbagging and insulting members when there are secure measures to do this electronically with paper ballot options also allowed for those opting for paper ballot. It will save money on the long term for administrative fees and office and postal costs for membership and has more positives than negatives and transparent recording of how vote was tabulated that can be quickly provided to membership.

Comment 12

Electronic voting should be implemented by our board.

Comment 13

Voting is very safe, effective and quick results

Comment 14

We often are out of town and can’t get our paper votes mailed in time. Electronic voting would allow us to have a voice from wherever we may be.

Comment 15

They can’t mess with the system so they don’t want to allow it.

Comment 16

It’s about time to become part of the 21st century.

Comment 17

It needs enacted immediately, the Membership meeting needs electronic voting.

Comment 18

Electronic voting would be quicker , easier and hold the board accountable.

Comment 19

Electronic voting is the most efficient and accommodating method of voting, for non permanent residents especially.

Comment 20

I want some type of electronic voting but still allow mail in voting also. How do you purpose electronic voting can vote for member proposals brought up at the members’ meeting in July?

Comment 21

I am very much in favor of electronic voting.

Comment 22

I believe electric voting will allow more members to be involved.

Comment 23

Very fair, no ballot harvesting, saves a lot of money in office expenses.

Comment 24

I believe electronic voting aids in more voters being able to access the ability to vote.

Comment 25

Because of the ability to corrupt a proxy/ paper voting system, a triple secure electronic voting system is a huge step forward into the 21st century. Instead of running this HOA like it’s 1964, it’s time to move into the years 2024 / 25. Also by implementing electronic voting, we then have the ability to contact every member on other issues and save money on our mailing. When I hear our Board of Trustees say, oh it’s only 3%, or 5%, or 7%, or 12%, it makes me want to vomit. There’s a lot of members here in Surfside who aren’t fixed income and those small percentages add up really quickly.

Comment 26

The format offers limited flexibility in responding to questions. Questions can be worded in a leading manner or possibly none of the answers offered could align with my individual answer. All should have free-form answer capability.

Comment 27

Not sure what info you are asking for here…

Comment 28

We need to do this immediately to allow more people to be involved.

Comment 29

Not only should election buddy be used for trustee elections, this platform could be used for polling. In the nearly 7 years that I have lived in Surfside full time, I have never been polled or surveyed on anything even though I have been attending many board meetings, as well as some of the committee meetings.

Comment 30

Strongly agree electronic voting should be implemented

Comment 31

We must include all members that don’t live here, which is the majority. Proxy votes are not a true way for absent members to vote and too easy to harvest

Comment 32

The goal is to replace the unfair and corrupt proxy process, the sooner the better.

Comment 33

Need to start

Comment 34

I’ll be quite interested to see what excuses the board comes up with this time to tube electronic balloting.

Comment 35

Should be implemented
