Rock the Locks has evolved into far more than an annual music festival. it has become an celebration of music, community and the shared excitmenf of watching great artists perform live. Although I missed the inaugural festival, this was my third Rock the Locks, and each year it has grown stronger, drawing larger crowds, attracting more impressive talent and becoming even more polished and professionally organized.
This year’s lineup brought an extraordinary variety of performers to Umatilla from across the Pacific Northwest, throughout North America and even overseas.
Friday featured Massachusetts hard-rock powerhouse Godsmack, North Carolina’s Daughtry, Georgia’s Jackyl, Los Angeles-based Dorothy, Florida’s Gunshine, Wyoming’s ZamTrip and Scandinavian glam-metal band The Cruel Intentions. They were joined by Spokane’s Vertigo Bliss and Second Sting, delivering the music of Germany’s legendary Scorpions.
Saturday expanded the musical journey even further. Simple Plan brought its infectious pop-punk energy from Montreal, while Theory of a Deadman represented British Columbia, Canada. Atlanta’s Sevendust delivered a powerful alternative-metal performance, Nashville’s Goodbye June supplied blues-infused rock, and Seattle-born Candlebox returned with the post-grunge sound that helped define an era. Limberlost, Mercury Rising, Bombshell Molly and returning festival favorite Blue Tattoo demonstrated the remarkable depth of regional talent.
Sunday continued that diversity with Jacksonville, Florida’s legendary Lynyrd Skynyrd, Sacramento’s Tesla, New Orleans party-rock favorites Cowboy Mouth and Salt Lake City’s Royal Bliss. The Rockett Mafia brought arena-rock energy from Minnesota, while the Yakima-Selah area’s Leviticuss and Hermiston singer-songwriter Dallin Puzey proudly represented the region. The result was a remarkable musical trip across cities, states, countries, generations and rock-and-roll styles.
For lifelong music fans, festivals like this are a gift. Fans of the bands proudly showed off their favorite band jackets and tshirts. They allow us to enjoy legendary headliners while discovering new bands, exceptional musicians and songs we might never have encountered otherwise. Every performer—from the earliest opening act to the closing headliner—brought talent, passion and tremendous energy to the stage. I cannot recall a single band that failed to deliver an excellent performance.
I have followed music since the 1970s, through the ’80s, ’90s and every decade since. Hearing hard rock and heavy metal performed with such passion took me back to my roots. Seeing so many younger people in the audience also demonstrated that this music lives on, inspiring new generations of fans alongside those who grew up with these bands.
The highlight for me was seeing Lynyrd Skynyrd perform “Free Bird”, arguably the greatest concert anthem ever, was an unforgettable and memorable experience. Seeing Lynyrd Skynyrd for the first time was a lifetime goal.
What makes Rock the Locks truly special, however, is its people. Fans traveled from throughout Oregon, Washington and beyond, while the communities of Umatilla tricities, Pendleton and Hermiston attended in force. Whether seated with friends or crowded close to the stage, the audience enthusiastically supported every performer. Their applause, cheers and excitement must have been as memorable for the bands as the performances were for the fans.
Even the cold wind could not diminish the experience; the music made it easy to forget. Food and beverage vendors offered an excellent variety, while the sponsors, organizers, workers and volunteers handled the enormous logistics to deliver a festival with great memories.
After three unforgettable days, we walked away exhilarated—filled with joy, new music, new bands to follow, new friends and memories that will last a lifetime. Rock the Locks has become an outstanding annual event, and this year’s festival was truly extraordinary.
We drive home in a state of heavy metal music euphoria. Well done to all the bands and the community that delivered a great experience. We now will enthusiastically look forward to next year.
