Surfside HOA Weighs Second Deputy and Costs

Surfside HOA’s board discussed a second contracted sheriff’s deputy at its September 19, 2026 meeting, citing the assigned deputy’s injury-related absence and possible retirement within about two years. No additional spending or second contract was approved. Currently, the Surfside HOA is not paying for the deputy while out although money was paid to fund the deputy in last year’s fees.

Supporters said another deputy could improve coverage during absences and provide continuity when the current deputy retires. Members estimated recruitment and training could take a year or longer if the county hires a new recruit, but no county timetable was confirmed. Sheriff’s office coverage and responses to calls continue without the dedicated deputy.

A second deputy was estimated based on the existing contract to cost HOA residents an additional $4.44 per month per lot, or $53.28 annually based in current costs —about 6.92% of last year’s $770 annual dues. Two deputies at that rate would represent approximately 13.84% of annual dues. No complete budget was presented, and these figures exclude county-funded vehicle and support costs that county taxpayers pay. With the dedicated deputy currently unavailable, residents need clarification about what they paid for but received no dedicated Surfside patrolling.

Under the county’s 2026 patrol agreement, Surfside reimburses the deputy’s wages and benefits. Pacific County supplies the equipped patrol car and pays for vehicle insurance, maintenance, fuel, training, uniforms, radios, and other support. A second position of permanent  could therefore add county expenses, even if homeowners cover personnel costs. No county vehicle purchase or additional  operating-cost estimate was provided.

The HOA has stated crime rates have decreased but no data was provided. Surfside members appreciate the service and dedication of the sheriff and officers in keeping Pacific county safe. They have a tough job covering the entire county. The added officer certainly helps in making our communities safe.

The board  said Surfside was not currently being charged for the absent deputy.  It also provides for regular county-level patrol service during such an absence.

Some members favored restoring dedicated patrol coverage under the existing agreement, but no clear timeline was provided. A second deputy position was proposed to improve continuity during absences and future staffing transitions. Further discussion was planned for the October board meeting following consultation with the sheriff and county commissioners.

Surfside HOA members certainly appreciate the ability to add dedicated officers for patrols. An option not available to other county residents.

Before approving another contract, Surfside HOA  homeowners and county residents need a written proposal identifying total costs, vehicle needs, hiring timelines, coverage during absences, and whether Surfside intends to maintain one or two deputies permanently. The October board meeting would ideally provide additional clarity on what’s being proposed. For residents, understanding the increase in dues, is important in times where budgets are tight.
